Bio
Franklin Kenechukwu is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) in Germany. He holds a PhD in Pharmaceutics (Drug Delivery) from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in 2017. Dr. Franklin Kenechukwu is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher with the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Martin-Luther University (MLU), Halle-Wittenberg, Halle (Saale), Germany, where he is researching on development of novel nano-sized combo-therapies for cerebral malaria. He was a CNPq-TWAS postdoctoral research fellow at the Instituto de Macromoleculas Professora Eloisa Mano (IMA) Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he researched on development of biopolymeric multiparticulate controlled drug delivery systems for improved treatment of malaria and onychomycosis.
Dr. Franklin Kenechukwu has researched extensively on development of engineered nanomedicines for improved topical and transmucosal drug delivery for enhanced treatment of infectious diseases, especially bacterial, fungal infections and vector-borne protozoan diseases. To this end, he has applied a wide variety of techniques at various biopharmaceutical, microbiological and molecular levels. His research findings have been widely published with over 130 publications in local and peer-reviewed high-impact international journals, which have been cited in several research articles, review articles and book chapters. He has also made several scientific presentations at both local and international conferences and has published many electronic and printed book chapters. He was the Managing Editor (Editorial Secretary) of the African Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, an institutional journal of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria.
The main achievements/strengths of Kenechukwu include more than twelve years of continuous upgrading in teaching and research skills, and research leadership; a strong capacity for teamwork, and a growing establishment of fruitful international collaboration; development of an independent, usually hypothesis-driven philosophy to address complex biomedical/pharmaceutical problems that require step by step approximations and multidisciplinary approaches; and publication of several scientific papers that have granted him with national and international recognition in the field of drug delivery.
Dr. Franklin Kenechukwu is a member of many prestigious professional bodies including the Affiliate African Academy of Sciences (AAS), Nigerian Young Academy (NYA), Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), National Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA), Nanomedicines Society of Nigeria (NSN), Controlled Release Society (CRS) and Royal Society of Tropical Medicines and Hygiene (RSTMH). He is also a recipient of several national and international research and travel awards and grants including: Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Georg Forster Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (Germany, 2022); International Foundation for Science (IFS) Basic Research Grant (Sweden, 2021), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) Grant (Nigeria, 2019); African Germany Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES) Research Grant (Germany, 2019); National Council for Scientific and Technological Development and The World Academy of Sciences (CNPq-TWAS) Research Fellowship Award (Brazil, 2018); African Academy of Science Affiliateship Award [2021-2026]; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Global Health Travel Award to Atlanta Georgia (USA, 2023); Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting (JITMM, 2022) Travel Award, to attend JITMM 2022 in Bangkok (Thailand, 2022); Molecular Approaches to Malaria (MAM) 2020 Travel Award to Victoria (Australia, 2020); Wellcome Center for Anti-infectives Research (WCAIR) Travel Award to Scotland (United Kingdom, 2019), National Institute of Science and Technology of Complex Fluids (O Instituto Nacional de Ciencia e Tecnologia de Fluidos Complexos: INCT-FCx) Travel Bursary to Sao Paulo (Brazil, 2019); Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Global Health Travel Award to Berlin (Germany, 2018); Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Early Career Grant (United Kingdom, 2017), Clinical Nanomedicines Fellowship (Switzerland, 2017) and PolyChar/UNL Fellowship (USA, 2015), among others.
He is an established reviewer of more than 20 international journals and Elsevier books. Furthermore, he has won several institutional/national/international research grants as co-investigator at UNN, including TETFund Institution-based Research (IBR) Grant, Grand Challenges Canada Award, IFS Research Grant and TETFund NRF Grant. He was recently rated as one of the top 500 most influencing researchers by Scholarly Output in Nigeria over the periods 2014-2019 and 2020-2023.
In the academic front, he has trained and mentored several pharmacists, scientists and professionals worldwide.
