Fernando Alcaide

I am a medical doctor and specialized in clinical microbiology. I have been the head of the Mycobacteria laboratory at the Bellvitge University Hospital in Barcelona for more than 20 years. This is a reference Hospital in our health region that covers more than 1 million inhabitants. I have worked with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the rapid diagnosis of Tuberculosis and in some drug resistance mechanisms as well as in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection. I have also worked on non-tuberculous Mycobacteria, such as M. kansasii among others, and especially on identification, susceptibility and even on antimicrobial resistance mechanisms.
