Research interests:
Dr. Kim's main research interests are various transport phenomena in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, including solar physics, fusion plasmas, and astrophysical fluid dynamics. In particular, she is interested how coherent structures, such as large-scale shear flows and magnetic fields, form in these systems and how they influence and interact with small-scale turbulence. These problems are crucial in understanding not only the current solar magnetic activities (solar cycle and flares) and rotational profiles, but also the entire magnetic and rotational evolution of the Sun and other stars. Furthermore, the understanding of turbulent transport is absolutely crucial to fusion plasmas in order to improve the confinement by minimizing the transport and thus to utilize fusion as an economic future energy source. She has been working on many problems related to these issues, including dynamos, reconnection, momentum transport, the formation of transport barrier by shear flows and magnetic fields, and statistical formulation on intermittent transport.
