个人简介
Estrella Montero is a Doctor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and works as a research at the National Center for Microbiology (CNM), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCiii), Madrid, Spain. She has a wide expertise in molecular and cellular Parasitology, that it has currently applied in the study of Babesia and human babesiosis infections and previously, during her pre-doctoral period, in the diagnosis and control of infections caused by Taenia solium, T. saginata, T. asiatica and Echinoccocus spp.
Babesiosis is considered an emerging disease because its incidence is constantly increasing owing to improved diagnosis and detection methods, thus providing further evidence of the expanding range of this rare but potentially life-threatening zoonotic disease. Babesia parasites invade erythrocytes causing babesiosis in animals and humans.
Dr. Montero commenced her studies on Babesia divergens and babesiosis in the group of Dr. Lobo from LFKRI New York Blood Center, NY, EEUU from 2004 to 2008. Her work was focused in elucidated the mechanics of invasion and egress of B. divegens. She also studied molecular similarities between B. divergens and the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, because both are Apicomplexa parasites that infect human erythrocytes. She identified and characterized Babesia molecules homologues to P. falciparum and produced IgG specific antibodies that inhibited the invasion process of B. divergens to the human erythrocytes. She also participated in the identification and molecular characterization of PfRH5, a novel reticulocyte-binding family homolog of Plasmodium falciparum that binds to a human erythrocyte receptor.
Since November 2009 to now, Dr. Montero has created a research line focused in the molecular and cellular study of B. divergens at the CNM. The group of Dr. Montero uses B. divergens in vitro culture as a working tool, since it is an excellent model that allows the study of molecular and cellular aspects of Apicomplexa parasites. A significant progress has already made by the group in relation to the kinetics and molecular mechanisms used by B. divergens to invade and then exit to the human erythrocyte. This has been possible by using several strategies that included the sequencing of the genome and transcriptome and the use of and time-lapse in vivo microscopy.
The group has also provided novel results on the three-dimensional cellular architecture of the parasite, as well as the cascade of differentiation from one stage to another by means of electron microscopy, X Cryo-soft X-Ray tomography time-lapse in vivo microscopy. The results acquired in relation to the cell biology of the parasite are currently being complemented with molecular, metabolomic and immunological studies that in the next future could be clarify important and critical biological process of B. divergens.
Moreover, the group has recently started molecular studies on Babesia duncani, Babesia divergens like MO1 and B. divergens Spanish strain, all species that infect humans, in collaboration with Yale University.
The group of Dr. Montero also works as a reference laboratory for the molecular and serologic diagnosis of human babesiosis in Spain. Epidemiological risk, serological diagnosis of human babesiosis and identification of ticks infected with Babesia spp. and other piroplams are other activities of interest that the group is carrying out in collaboration with national and intenational research centers and the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (Spain).
