Bio
Dr. Esther J. Smits is a Research Fellow at the RECOVER injury research center at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. RECOVER is a joint initiative of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission and The University of Queensland. Esther's background is Human Movement Sciences and she is currently working on the research programme 'Facilitating return to pre-injury functioning after a motor vehicle accident'. Previous to this role, Esther was working at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland, where her research was focused on ambulatory monitoring of physical activity, sleep and low back pain.
Esther received her PhD degree in January 2016 from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She performed her PhD research project at the department of Neurology at the University Medical Center Groningen (NL). Her PhD thesis was entitled 'Graphical tasks to aid in diagnosing and monitoring Parkinson's disease'. Her research was focused on evaluating a medical device, consisting of a sensor-pen and digital tablet to perform graphical tasks, such as handwriting and drawing.
