个人简介
My primary research interest is directed towards the study of life history evolution in aquatic systems. Life history traits such as growth, age at maturation, longevity, fecundity and offspring size together determine the fitness of individuals and therefore influence the dynamics and conservation state of populations. Despite a rash of recent studies on contemporary phenotypic changes in wild populations, there is still a limited understanding of how aquatic organisms respond to combinations of natural- and anthropogenic agents of selection. For instance, many species of harvested fish now spawn at considerably younger ages and smaller body sizes than they used to do some decades ago. Phenotypic plasticity is likely to play an important role in such contemporary changes, where, for instance, individual growth rates of cold-adapted fish may decrease in response to ocean warming. However, plasticity is unlikely to be the only mechanism leading to phenotypic changes. If there is a heritable component to trait variation, then coastal species may also evolve in response to selection. Currently, I run a 5 year program (2010-2015) funded by the Norwegian Research Council (shortlisted for an ERC Starting Grant) "Understanding fitness consequences of harvesting and protection of coastal marine resources – PROMAR", where we take advantage of marine reserves, in essence representing large-scale field experiments, for understanding the eco-evolutionary impact of harvesting on local populations. Key species are coastal Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), European lobster (Homarus gammarus), corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops) and anadromous brown trout (Salmo trutta). Through this project I also seek to understand how behaviour and space use of animals may shape their life histories and fitness. This focus is management-related, since behavioral traits influence the animals suceptibility to fishing gears as well as their level of protection within marine reserves.
