Bio
I am a conservationist with a special interest in bat research and the conservation of these little known mammals. For the past 20 or so years, I have spent investigating these creatures of the night. In 2004, established the open access quarterly journal African Bat Conservation News, which I currently still edit. In collaboration with Victor Van Cakenberghe (Research Associate, University of Antwerp, Belgium), we started a project in 2006 compiling all the information on bats in Africa into a single repository; the African Chiroptera Report. This report is freely available via the internet, in the hope that access to this information will improve conservation planning for Africa’s bat diversity, and highlight areas where additional research is required. In 2012, together with Mark Keith, Teresa Kearney, Leon Labuschagne and Victor Van Cakenberghe founded AfricanBats, a not-for-profit company, to secure a future for the African Bat Conservation News and the African Chiroptera Report, to allow these and other new tools to be refined and developed, and to support their use in implementing on the ground conservation measures for Africa’s bats.
I completed a Diploma and B. Tech. in Nature Conservation at Mangosuthu Technikon, and a M.Sc. in Resource Conservation Biology at the University of the Witwatersrand. I gained experience in environmental education working with the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa from 1997 until 2000, and then as a conservation manager in protected area management, working for 12 years from 2000 until 2012, with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment. As a conservation manager I initially worked on the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (integration of both cultural and natural management), while the last three years were spent establishing a Biodiversity Stewardship Programme to include private land into the conservation estate of the province.
In January 2015 was appointed as extraordinary lecturer in the Centre of Wildlife Management, Department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, University of Pretoria.
Currently, I am the Chief Executive Officer of AfricanBats, which the focus is on establishing and growing this NGO, with the aim of assisting conservation of bats in Africa.
