Bio
Erik F. Hensen is a neurotologist and lateral skull base surgeon at the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in The Netherlands. He studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), graduating with distinction in 1999. After a Residency at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG) hospital in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, he was Medical Researcher of the KWF Dutch Cancer Society at the LUMC before starting his training as otorhinolaryngologist at the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (LUMC, The Netherlands). From 2008-2017 he was appointed as ENT surgeon specializing in Otology at the VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (currently Amsterdam University Medical Center- VUmc). In 2012, He finished his doctoral thesis titled 'Paragangliomas of the Head and Neck, genetics, heredity and clinical characteristics'. In 2015, he won a fellowship from the Stichting het Heinsius Houboldt Fonds, The Netherlands, allowing him to specialize in neurotology and lateral skull base surgery. After a fellowship at the LUMC (Leiden, The Netherlands) and several observerships in neurotology centers of excellence (Hôpital Pitié-Salpetrière, Paris, France; Clinica Otologia Garcia Ibañez, Barcelona, Spain; House Ear Institute, Los Angeles, USA; Luzerner Kantonspital, Luzern, Switzerland), he transferred to the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the LUMC (Leiden, The Netherlands) in 2017.
As a neurotologist and lateral skull base surgeon, he is currently managing dedicated care pathways for cerebellopontine angle tumors, NF2-type schwannomatosis, paragangliomas, and rare lateral skull base pathologies at the LUMC (Leiden, The Netherlands). In addition, he is principal investigator of the Leiden Skull Base Center research group and has supervised several successful PhD projects in neurotology. Current research projects, like the clinical care, focus on cerebellopontine angle tumors, NF2-type schwannomatosis, paragangliomas, and rare lateral skull base pathologies.
Additional functions and activities:
Erik Hensen is co-director of the Otorhinolaryngology Residency Program at the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (LUMC, The Netherlands), chair of the Residency Program Inspection Committee of the Dutch Otorhinolaryngology Society, and member of several national steering- and guideline committees (from the Dutch Otorhinolaryngology Society, Dutch Neurology Society, and ZonMW).
He is the co-founder of the Dutch National Consultative Body for Skull Base Pathology (LOES).
