个人简介
I am a researcher working in the fields of plant ecology, plant-soil interactions, community ecology and functional ecology. During my Ph.D., I used observational and experimental studies conducted at regional and local scales to evaluate the responses of the functional structure of plant communities to climate and land cover changes, and to determine how plant functional attributes ultimately affect ecosystem functioning in semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystems. The main goal of the observational studies was to assess whether aridity and shrub encroachment affected ecosystem functioning directly or indirectly via changes in functional structure of natural dryland communities (two papers: New Phytologist, impact factor: 7.7; and Journal of Ecology, impact factor: 5.7). I also conducted a common garden experiment with Mediterranean semiarid species. In this study, I evaluated how changes in plant functional structure and microbial communities (bacteria and protists) promoted by climate change drivers and species richness, impacted multifunctionality (Global change Biology, impact factor: 8.9). This multidisciplinary approach allowed me the opportunity to develop independent thinking and leadership abilities, and to learn several statistical techniques and the R statistical framework.
Furthermore, I obtained two travel grants for research stays (France with Dr Nicholas Gross in 2012 and with Dr Sebastien Forntaine in 2013). Additionally, I participated in a global effort to assess whether biotic community attributes modulate the response of dryland ecosystems to the ongoing global environmental change. To achieve this aim, I used vascular plants, biological soil crusts and microorganisms as model communities. These results were published in several renowned peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature and some of the best Biology and Ecology journals.
Also, I was a Postdoctoral Research at the University of South Bohemia (Czech Republic), under the supervision of Drs. Francesco de Bello and Jan Lepš. I was working on expanding and updating the analyses of patterns in temporal synchrony within different types of communities. In addition, I performed a global analysis of existing long-term community data to evaluate the main drivers of stability. As a result of this study, I published several papers, one of them in the top international journal PNAS (impact factor: 9.4). During my time there, I obtained a BES Research grant to evaluate the effects of functional and phylogenetic diversity on ecosystem processes and functions.
Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Research at the Rey Juan Carlos University, thanks to a program for attracting and retaining talent of Comunidad de Madrid. In 2019, I obtained a project to evaluate the effects of intransitivity on the functional structure of the community: a study through space and time.
Regarding to academic services, I have supervised one M.Sc., six B.Sc. theses, and I am currently co-directing a Ph.D. thesis entitled “Plant functional diversity & Community stability”. I have reviewed 17 projects since 2017 for the BES, Estonian Research Council and other agencies. I am a reviewer in several indexed and non-indexed publications. I have presented my work in 23 scientific meetings (15 oral communications) at the national and international level, and I am also acted as a guest editor of a special issue for JVS. Finally, I have organized science outreach activities for children and general public.
