Bio
I did a university degree in veterinary medicine in Mexico (UNAM), after completing my bachelor degree in 1994, I enrolled into a pig production course from which I obtained a diploma in 1996. Soon after, I got a scholarship from The British Council to do a MSc on Tropical Veterinary Medicine (Epidemiology) obtaining my MSc degree in 1997 at The University of Edinburgh. After completing my MSc, I obtained a scholarship from the Meat and Livestock Comission (UK) then registered into a PhD in 1998 to study EPIDEMIOLOGY, DETECTION, MOLECULAR TYPING AND CONTROL OF PORCINE COLONIC SPIROCHETOSIS (Brachyspira pilosicoli), so I gained experience on epidemiological analysis and molecular techniques to approach various aspects of applied microbiology to study infectious diseases. I graduated in 2003 with a PhD from The University of Edinburgh and also did a postdoctoral study (2003-2004) to look at the pathogenesis and control of Lawsonia intracellularis, an enteropathogen of pigs, for which we developed an infection model in mice. After completing my posgraduate studies I started an academic career at a public university in Mexico in 2005 for wihich teaching and tutoring students were the duties and responsabilities among others. Then in 2006 I established a research group to work on intestinal spirochaetes as to address the epidemiology of these pathogens and to gain knowledge on their epidemiological situation in Mexico, as practically, there was no information regarding these enteropathogens in the country. Since then we have done research work on intestinal spirochaetes in pigs, dogs, avian and humans as these pathogens can affect various hosts. The work done so far has demonstrated that Brachyspira is a pathogen that has been isolated and identified from various hosts in Mexico. As a matter of this research work I have had collaborations with a group of the Veterinary College in the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and a group of the Biological Sciences of Stephen Austin State University (SFA), in Texas USA. A student from Argentina came over to Mexico to complete a short stay research programme to learn laboratory methodologies applied to intestinal spirochaetes in my lab.
Currently I am an academic lecturing on pig medicine and production, and epidemiology. I am working on intestinal spirochaetes as to expand the knowledge and to address the co-infections they produce on domestic animals, particularly pigs. I have collaborative work with public hospitals to study Brachyspira infections as this pathogen has public health (zoonoticala) concerns.
My research interest is on infectious microbes, particularly on enteric diseases. I am interested in diagnostics, molecular epidemiology and public health.
