Bio
Enric Vilar (M'86) received the Degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona, the Doctorate in Electronics from the University of Paris, France, and the PhD from University College, University of London, U.K., in 1972. He carried out research for two years at the Ionospheric Research Group of CNET Labs in Paris, for one year at ESTEC (ESA), Holland, and was group leader for three years with Alcatel-Standard Eléctrica Research Labs (formerly ITTLS) in Madrid, Spain, in European space projects until 1975. He has also been Electronics group manager with Schlumberger in the 60's (formerly Compagnie des Compteurs) in Barcelona, Spain.
In 1975 he joined the University of Portsmouth founding the Microwave Telecommunication Systems (MTS) research group (http://www2.ee.port.ac.uk) and has held the Chair of Telecommunication Systems till 2004. He is now Emeritus Professor of the University of Portsmouth and continues his research in aspects of millimetre wave propagation in Earth-Space paths. His past interests have included LOS and transhorizon propagation in both CW and wide band, satellite propagation (from OTS in the late 70's to ITALSAT in the late 90's, and now HOTBIRD 6) for communications and remote sensing, measurement and characterization of precipitation rate and drop-size distributions, and phase noise in oscillators. He initiated the research into wide band indoors communications and more recently the effects of precipitation as dynamic interference in urban and suburban environments as well as the fractal modelling and synthesis of rainfall rate fields as applied to diversity usage.
Dr. Vilar is a Fellow of the UK IEE and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona.
