Career Trajectory
Bio
Graduated in Biology from the University of Seville, I did a master's degree in Biotechnology at the Pablo de Olavide University and at its end, a first international internship at the Slovak Academy of Science (Nitra, Slovakia). In that stay I worked on proteomics of soybeans in the Chernobyl area. In 2010 I started my PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology of microalgae at the University of Huelva. During the PhD period, I obtained a very solid training in biochemical techniques and molecular tools for the genetic engineering of microalgae with application in the bio-production of compounds with high added value and the improvement of the self-flocculation processes of these microorganisms. In addition, in 2013 I made a short stay in France, at the Laboratory of Bioenergetics and Biotechnology of Microalgae and Bacteria of the CNRS, at the CEA-Cadarache center, Aix-Marseille University, where I acquired knowledge about microalgae lipidomics. On the other hand, I made another research stay in Portugal, in 2014, at the University of the Algarve, at the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology, at the Institute of Environmental and Marine Research (CIMA). During this stay, I worked mainly in the photoproduction of lipids and the growth of microalgae in agro-industrial waste, thus completing my pre-doctoral period with the acquisition of a broad research profile, highlighting the acquisition of experience in multidisciplinary techniques: in genomics, proteomics, lipidomics, biochemistry or techniques in analytical chemistry. This experience is reflected in an extensive scientific production with several articles in peer-reviewed journals, a patent and numerous participations in conferences and congresses. During the period 2016-2020, I developed my scientific career as a postdoctoral researcher. First, for three years in the Laboratory of Biology and Biotechnology of Cyanobacteria of the CEA-Saclay center of the Paris-Saclay University, in France and second, in the Computational and Synthetic Biology Group of the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), in Barcelona. The scientific activity developed during these postdoctoral years is framed in the use of synthetic biology tools and genetic and metabolic engineering in microalgae and cyanobacteria to build "cyano-factories", capable of photoproducing compounds with high added value, mainly terpenes, with properties of interest for the aerospace biofuel industry. This period resulted in a production of 4 scientific articles published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and participation in international congresses and conferences. After my postdoctoral period, in mid-2020, I started working as head of the Microalgae Area in the company Kimitec Group for a year and a half. In this period of experience in the private industry, I acquired knowledge of both the pilot and semi-industrial scale cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria, as well as the area of project management and development of biostimulant products and formulations, biocides and biofertilizers derived from these microorganisms. Currently, and since the beginning of 2021, I am part of the research group "Response to Stress by Metals in Photosynthetic Microorganisms" of the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis of the CSIC-University of Seville. Here I am participating, as a contracted researcher, in several research projects aimed at studying the response of cyanobacteria to different metallic stresses and generating strains of microalgae resistant to high temperature and irradiance, environmental conditions that are occurring more and more frequently in nature as a result of climate change. This last period has resulted in the publication of a scientific article, two in preparation and participation in several national and international congresses and symposia. Finally, in this last year I have been able to tutor the practical research work of a student of the CEU-San Pablo higher education center and, in addition, I have obtained the positive evaluation from ANECA for the figure Associate Professor.
My scientific career can be summarized in three main lines of research:
a) Development and optimization of molecular biology, synthetic biology and genetic engineering tools in photosynthetic microorganisms.
b) Obtaining and production of high added value compounds derived from microalgae and cyanobacteria with biotechnological application in aquaculture, biomedicine and the biofuel industry.
c) Study of the physiological and molecular mechanisms involved in the response to thermal, light and metal stress in microalgae and cyanobacteria.
