个人简介
When he joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University, DiBenedetto continued his work on PDEs, but at the same time he started a new project in BioMathematics, in particular dealing with the mathematical modeling of phototransduction in the eye of vertebrates. The idea of undertaking this effort was, among others, surely related to discussions with his wife Heidi Hamm, a distinguished scientist in the field of cell signaling and of phototransduction. Besides his PhD students, PostDocs and Research Associates, it is practically impossible to list all the scientists who have benefitted from DiBenedetto’s input over the years: he was always very generous in sharing ideas, comments, conjectures, possible counterexamples. At the same time, he had high standards for himself and all his collaborators: problems should be clearly motivated, papers need to be written in a terse way, unnecessary phrases are to be avoided, there can be no room for quick and easy compromises. Sometimes, this attitude made things challenging for his co-workers, but eventually ensured a scientific activity of great level. One of his students once said that he was not only a mentor, but also a real maestro.
