Bio
I completed my PhD in Water Resources Science at Rhodes University in South Africa in 2018. My bio-physical research is focused within the stressor-response domain where I contribute to the use of increased “environmental realism” in experimental ecotoxicology, particularly regarding to acid mine drainage, industrial effluent and salt as toxicants and salinisation as a stressor exacerbated by climate change and anthropogenic activities. I have developed risk-based water quality guidelines for acid mine drainage and sulphates (salinity) within the South African setting. Additionally, my research also takes the trait-based approach to investigate how traits of organisms influence responses of aquatic macroinvertebrates to various stressors. I have applied the use of riverine test organisms, dechlorinated water as the test system and both short- and long-term exposures in the development of the water quality guidelines. My research contributes to on-the–ground improvements to environmental health. This is the concept of ‘balancing resource protection and use’. Currently, major research focus is centered at unlocking the diminishing impacts of anthropogenic (mainly mining) activities on ecosystem services. I am using drones (unmanned aerial vehicle) for ecological mapping and assessments.
Back in 2014/15, I was a Young Scientist Participant at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA): Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (SA-YSSP): "Extract of Africa: Towards the equitable and ecologically-sound governance of mining and drilling". I was awarded a prize for the Best Young Scientist Communicator (2015), at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA): Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (SA-YSSP) 2014–15. I am a member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), Water Institute for Southern Africa (WISA) and the Young Waters Professionals (YWP). I am in the process of registering with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). The idea is to stay and conduct research on the African continent.
