Bio
As a malacologist, I am interested in both land and freshwater mollusks. These animals are one of the least studied but are overwhelmingly diverse in a tropical island-arc system such as the Philippines. I mainly use land snails, particularly the endemic helicostylines, camaenids and helicarionids, as models to explain how invertebrate community structure vary and evolve in different ecological and geographic settings. I also have researches focused on testing the presence of adaptive/non-adaptive radiation and co-evolution of land snails against their natural predators. I use biostatistical (e.g. geometric morphometrics, ordination and ecological modelling) and molecular biology (phylogenetic) techniques to address these questions.
I also conduct ecotoxicological studies involving the freshwater mollusks such as the lymnaeid, Radix quadrasi. I use the different life stages of this species to determine the acute and sublethal effects of heavy metals and organic pollutants which can help in water quality monitoring in the freshwater ecosystem.
