Bio
My research career began in 2003, when I joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Vigo (UVIGO). During this stage, I carried out several investigations involving projects with companies while contributing to the research lines developed by the group, mainly in the field of ionic liquids (ILs). In July 2004, I defended my bachelor's thesis, and I obtained the Diploma de Estudios Avanzados (DEA), in 2006.
In September 2006, a group of professors and I created a “spin off” dedicated to the synthesis and commercialization of ionic liquids, where I worked for one year.
Afterwards, in December 2007, I returned to the UVIGO to undertake my doctoral studies focused on the application of ILs in the extraction of aromatic compounds present in mixtures with alkanes. I was graduated from my PhD in July 2010, receiving the extraordinary doctorate award.
During my predoctoral stage, my research was devoted to the physical characterization of ILs, both pure and in mixtures, and on the theoretical and experimental studies of phase equilibria of systems involving hydrocarbons and ILs. During this time, I published 1 book chapter, 22 JCR scientific articles, and summited 8 communications in scientific congresses.
In October 2010, I won a postdoctoral scholarship funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology-Portugal (FCT), and I joined the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering (LSRE) at the University of Porto. In August 2014, I moved to Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) as Juan de la Cierva Researcher.
During my stay in Portugal, I carried out relevant studies on physical properties and phase behavior of ILs in polar and non-polar solvents. From April to July 2012, I also was in PLAPIQUI – CONICET (Bahía Blanca, Argentina), where I carried out a work on the thermodynamic modelling of phase equilibria of mixtures of ILs with hydrocarbons using an equation of state based on the contribution of groups (GC-EoS). During these almost 4 years in Portugal, I published a total of 25 articles (22 JCR; 18 in Q1), 1 book chapter and summited 16 communications in scientific congress.
In September 2014 I joined at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) as “Juan de la Cierva” Researcher. My stay at UCM was short as in November 2015 I took up a position as “Profesor Ayudante Doctor” at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).
During my period at UCM, I carried out several works based both on the experimental determination of vapor-liquid equilibrium data of systems containing ILs, and the application of the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) for the prediction of equilibrium data in systems involving these solvents. During this short period of time, I published 7 scientific articles in JCR journals. These articles are related to the projects: "LIQUORGAS. Use of ionic liquids as an alternative to organic solvents in processes and products" (S2013-MAE-2800), funded by the “Comunidad de Madrid (CAM)”, and/or "Design of a process for the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from pyrolysis gasoline using a binary mixture of ionic liquids" (CTQ2014-53655-R), funded by the “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad”.
In November 2015, I joined as “Profesor Ayudante Doctor” in the Department of Industrial Chemical Engineering and Environmental in ETSI Industriales-UPM, and since April 2020, I was employed as “Profesor Contratado Doctor-i3”. On December 14, 2021, I obtained the position of “Profesor Titular”.
Since my incorporation at UPM, I am doing teaching work as well as contributing to the implementation of a new research line in our group, which is based on the development of sustainable separation processes using new low environmental impact solvents, such as eutectic mixtures and bio-solvents. The goal of this research line is both to recover high - value compounds and to remove contaminants from specific streams. As a member of UPM I have participated in 2 research projects funded by CAM (LIQUORGAS and SUSTEC), have supervised 25 final degree projects and 1 PhD thesis, have published 20 scientific articles (16 JCR; 13 in Q1), and have presented more than 15 contributions to conferences. I have also been coordinator of the project "Mejora del proceso de fermentación de los azúcares pirolíticos mediante la extracción líquida de inhibidores empleando disolventes eutécticos profundos (ETSII-UPM19-PU01)", financed by the ETSI Industriales. Currently, I am co-supervisor of 2 PhD students.
All the research work done over these years can be summarized as follows:
- 2 six-year research periods (3rd period under evaluation)
- Participation in 15 research projects
- 78 scientific articles (34 as 1st author): 69 JCR-indexed journals (61 in Q1)
- Cites: 2408 cites: h index of 32 (Scopus, 17-01-2023)
- 2 book chapters and editor of the book of abstracts of IMIL 2015 congress
- More than 40 contributions to conferences
- 2 awards: extraordinary doctorate award, 1 research award
