HBV is a grossly neglected disease in Sudan. Prevalence can reach 10% in healthy blood donors. Management is far from satisfactory. Recently, our institute embarked on an extensive research project to delineate the natural history of HBV infection and to identify better bio-predictors of HBV-induced hepatic damage. The project also looks at HBV prevalence and population movements in Sudan. The project is a collaborative effort between prominent national institutes. Funding is national.
