Bio
Elsa Teresa Rodrigues received her PhD degree in biosciences from the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, on June 1, 2016. With her PhD thesis, she was awarded an honourable mention, ranked third, of the Doctorate Award in Ecology 2017-Amadeu Dias Foundation by the Portuguese Ecological Society. Currently, she has a Junior Researcher position at UC (CEECIND/03543/2017), and has her research affiliation to the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet (CFE-UC). In this centre, she integrates the Marine and Coastal Ecosystems research group, and leads its Environmental and Human Safety research line. Elsa is also a researcher at the Portuguese Associate Laboratory TERRA, and a member of ACOI, the Coimbra Collection of Algae. At international level, she is linked to the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC), and is a collaborator of the Experimental and Applied Aquatic Ecology research group of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO, Brazil). Since December 2020, Elsa is a member of the Topical Advisory Panel of the peer-reviewed journal Water, and was Guest Editor of its Special Issue “Pathogens of Zoonotic Importance in the Aquatic Environment: Implications for Environmental and Human Health”.
Elsa is an aquatic ecologist and ecotoxicologist whose main research interest lies in the study of the effects of environmentally relevant hazardous substances on the aquatic compartment at different levels of the biological organization, from sub-cellular (mitochondria toxicity assessment) and cellular (cell-based toxicity assays) levels, to individual organisms and communities. She aims to estimate the potential hazard of pollutants by measuring environmental levels and setting aquatic environmental quality standard values, and, in a screening-level evaluation using cell-based assays, to contribute to the animal and human risk assessment of new compounds of environmental interest. In parallel, she is also concerned with the potential adverse effect of pollutants in the context of human exposure via food items, as numerous aquatic species are edible and considered of economic interest. She also develops research activities related to alternative in vitro cell-based assays in aquatic ecotoxicology. Elsa already integrated three scientific research projects: Reconnect, Climatroph and FishFree.
Other interests? She believes that knowledge on, and the understanding of, the importance of aquatic ecosystems, particularly estuaries, provided in schools and to the general public will contribute to high-level education and ensure people’s support, since our day-to-day actions may have a cumulative effect on environmental and human health. Accordingly, she currently coordinates two non-degree courses of UC financed by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan: the “UC SCIENCE WEEK”, which is the first course of UC for pre-university students, and the “Blue literacy for a sustainable development” course, aiming to increase education, training, culture and ocean literacy among secondary school teachers.
To date (April 30, 2023), Elsa has a total of 24 Web of Science Core Collection publications (443 times cited) in the quartiles Q1 (75%) and Q2 (25%). In 71% of these articles, she is first or last author, and in one third foreign teams were involved. Elsa is also co-author of a United Nations SDG-14 Springer Encyclopaedia chapter. She annually participates in the teaching activities of the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of UC, having 43 hours allocated to the current academic year (2022/2023). From 2016, Elsa has been successful in mentoring young researchers as she already supervised two MSc and six undergraduate students; and currently she co-supervises one PhD student of UC and one BSc student of Coimbra´s Higher School of Agronomics (ESAC).
