Bio
Ella completed her Bachelor and Master degrees in Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia. She received her PhD training at the Department of Physiology, The University of Hong Kong. Ella’s research is focused in understanding the underlying mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle function in health and disease. Skeletal muscles exhibit high plasticity in response to stimuli and is regulated by intracellular signaling cascades that control transcription and protein translation of phenotype-specific genes. This adaptation offers a remarkable opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of muscle injury, wasting, adaptation, exercise, degeneration and regeneration. The hypothesis is tested in cellular, animal and clinical models to decipher the mechanisms of action with the ultimate goal to translate these insights into potential therapeutic approaches. Her scope of research includes: (i) muscle damage in Duchenne muscular dystrophy; (ii) disuse skeletal muscle atrophy; and (iii) muscle injury in sports. These are important fields of research that influence the science of physiotherapy and rehabilitation medicine. The overall aim is to contribute and expand the body of knowledge concerning physiotherapy practice. She has published in journals such as Journal of Physiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Ella’s personal interest and professional experience have influenced her significantly in the desire to work in the field of sports medicine and rehabilitation. She has worked as sports physiotherapist in numerous international sports events. For many years Ella has served in different National teams to help athletes prevent and overcome sports injuries. She was the Team Physiotherapist to the China Women’s Hockey Team at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games. Ella has also been appointed to the Sports Medicine Specialist team of the China Olympic Team for London 2012 and Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. As a physiotherapist working closely with elite athletes, she has a dedicated research program that study sports injury prevention and rehabilitation. She is also the Coordinator of the Student Sports Training and Rehabilitation (STAR) Program where she provides training to students in pitch side physiotherapy care in a variety of sports.
