Izi Stoll is the Founding Director of the Western Institute for Advanced Study. She received bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Biology at the University of Illinois, and earned a PhD in Neurobiology and Behavior from the University of Washington. She then moved to the United Kingdom to conduct post-doctoral training at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research, then started her own lab at the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University, leading a team of talented scientists to develop new small-molecule and gene therapy-based treatments for neurological disease. Her highly translational research into the mechanisms of age-related disease garnered awards from the Society for Neuro Oncology and The American Federation for Aging Research.
With over twenty years of experience in experimental neuroscience research, Dr. Stoll is adept at using a range of molecular, cellular, systems-level, and computational approaches to solve problems in the biological sciences. She has expertise in creating primary cell cultures, viral-vector-based gene therapies, animal models of disease, and novel protocols to assess cellular physiology. She also has a decade of experience in theoretical research, devising mathematical models of neuronal function in health and disease. Dr. Stoll has published in the fields of neuroscience, aging, stem cells, gene therapies, and cancer; led a research team to develop advanced medicinal products toward clinical trial; supervised staff and students on milestone-driven projects; trained personnel on state-of-the-art laboratory techniques; set up tissue culture facilities and molecular biology facilities; designed, manufactured, and validated viral-vector-based gene therapies; isolated, expanded, and evaluated stem cell products; conducted custom animal behavior assays to evaluate neurological disease progression; and coordinated with administrators and contractors on clinical trials planning.
