Bio
I am trained as a primatologist, behavioral neuroscientist, and developmental scientist. I earned my B.S. in Psychology and Communication Disorders in from Baldwin-Wallace College (now Baldwin Wallace University) and my M.S./Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Behavior from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. From 2010-2012, I was a NIH/NICHD postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Developmental Science. I joined the Department of Psychology at Florida International University in 2012 as an Assistant Professor, and established the HANDS Lab. I was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2019. I am a core faculty member in the Developmental Science and Cognitive Neuroscience programs, and train doctoral students in both areas. My research broadly examines laterality and motor skill in primate behavior using methods such as Observer® XT software for advanced video coding, Animal Behaviour Pro for real-time observational data collection, and MaxTRAQ software for video-based motion analysis. My research is grounded in systems theory, and guided by evolutionary and developmental questions regarding how the hands are used for reaching, grasping, and manipulation. My work has been funded by several intramural and extramural grants. In 2011, I received the Hennessy-Smotherman-Wiley Best Student Paper Award from the journal Developmental Psychobiology. I was recognized by the FIU College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE) for Teaching in 2016, and for Research in 2019.
