Bio
Born in Moshi Rural District in Kilimanjaro Region, I attended Primary School at Masaranga Primary School from 1980 to 1986 and O-level Secondary School at Mawenzi Secondary School from 1987 to 1990. Advanced -level Secondary School was at Old-Moshi Secondary School from 1991 to 1993. I joined National Service at Makutopora JKT in Dodoma and later moved to Bulombora JKT in Kigoma for six-months duration. In 1994-1999, I joined University of Dar es Salaam, Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) where I obtained my Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree. I attended one year Internship Programme at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) from October 1999 to November 2000. In February 2001, I was employed by the Ministry of Health and posted at the Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) School as Tutor and also a Resource Person for the Lake Zone Training Centre based at BMC. As part of the employement, I was assigned as Registrar in Department of Pediatrics for one year and later moved to the Department of Surgery from 2002 to 2005. In January 2005, I was moved to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) headquarters where I have been working at various capacities to date. In October 2009 to November 2010, I joined Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) where I obtained Master of Public Health (MPH).
I have attended short coursed within Tanzania (infection prevention and control -April 2004, coaching skills for supportive supervisors - March 2009, supportive supervision and mentoring - March 2011) and abroad - USA (International Visitors' Leadership Program on HIV and AIDS in 2008), Swaziland (Project Planning and Management in March 2008, Governance, Ethics and Change Management in August 2007), And South Africa (Hospital Acquired Infections Africa in July 2005). I have also participated in online Causes - Introduction to Global Health as part of the MOOCs in June 2014, Health and Human Rights - Dimensions and Strategies by Then InWent (now part of GIZ) from November 2007 to March 2008, Health Financing also as part of the then InWent.
My research experience starts from the works done as part of my undergraduate training: Field Research Projects (Nutrition) - Prevalence of Malnutrition and Associated Factors among under-fives in Kibaha District, September 1996; (Communicable Diseases Control) - Prevalence of diarrhea and associated factors among under-fives in Kibaha District, May 1997; (Community Medicine rotation) - Prevalence of Acute Respiratory Tract Infections (ARI) and it's associated factors among under-fives in selected villages of Bagamoyo District, October 1997; and (Elective research study as a partial fulfillment for the award of Degree of Doctor of Medicine) - Prevalence of cigarette smoking and associated factors among Secondary School Adolescents in Moshi Urban District, September 1998. My Dissertation for the Master of Public Health (MPH) is titled: "Assessment of Maternal Postnatal Care Utilization and Associated Factors among Women with Infants Aged 2-6 Months in Shinyanga Rural District, Shinyanga Region, October 2010. I have also co-authored two publications: Manyele, S.V., Ngonyani, H.A.M., Eliakimu, E. (2008). The status of occupational safety among health service providers in hospitals in Tanzania. My areas of interest include: global health, health systems strengthening, quality improvement in health services, occupational safety and health including infection prevention and control, health financing and health insurance, health and human rights including human rights approach to health programming and health policy, health systems and health facilities performance, millennium development goals and post-2015 sustainable development goals, health systems research, health inequality and health justice.
