Career Trajectory
Bio
Elisa Borghi, born in Varese in 1974, received her degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Pavia, and her PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Milan. In 2002 she spent a short period at the Center for Neurovirology and Cancer Biology of the Temple University of Philadelphia, under the supervision of Prof. K. Khalili, for the study of JCV proteins interaction with functional cellular factors. In 2006 she obtained a tenure position as Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Milan. From 2005 to 2006 she worked at the Laboratory of Microbiology, directed by Prof. Morace, where she was involved in the molecular typing of bacterial and fungal strains, in the in vitro susceptibility testing and in the study of mechanisms underlying the drug resistance. In 2011 she has been hosted in Prof. Mylonakis laboratory at the Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, for studying Candida albicans pathogenesis in the invertebrate models Galleria mellonella and Caenorhabditis elegans. From 2018 to 2021 she has been an Associate Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Milan. Since 2021she has been a Full Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Milan. In the last ten years, she focused her studies on microbial biofilm, especially in terms of antimicrobial drug resistance. She is member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), of the Italian Society of Microbiology (SIM), and of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM). She is a member of the Executive Board of the Italian Federation of Human and Animal Mycology (FIMUA). She is the Secretary of the ESCMID Biofilm Study Group (EBSG) and a member of the ISHAM Working Group on Fungal respiratory infections in Cystic Fibrosis. Elisa Borghi is co-author of 98 peer-reviewed publications on international journals. She received grants from the ESCMID society (Project title: sphingolipid targeting in microbial infection and inflammation), and from the Italian Ministry of Health (Study of the causal relationship between intestinal permeability, microbial translocation and T lymphocyte hyperactivation in HIV-infected patients with poor immunological response in course of suppressive HAART).
