Career Trajectory
Bio
Elaine G. Mission received her BSc in Chemical Engineering (2004) and MSc in Chemical Engineering (2010) from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and De La Salle University, Manila Philippines, respectively.
In 2018, she obtained her Ph.D. in Advanced Technology (major in Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry) from Kumamoto University, Kumamoto, Japan, through the MEXT scholarship. Her research revolved around the depolymerization of natural biopolymers (cellulose and fucoidan from macroalgae) into fermentable sugars using water in subcritical conditions as the sole solvent under the synergy of microwave irradiation and graphene-based carbocatalysis. Her work has established microwave-carbocatalysis synergism which significantly contributed towards green and sustainable chemistry due the reduction in solvents and auxiliary steps to achieve good results. She was also a recipient of several best poster and travel grant awards, including the 10th HOPE Meeting with Nobel Laureates sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). She has also lead a research project funded by the Sasakawa Scientific Research Grant. She is also actively reviewing for several journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production and Heliyon and has been an Associate member of the National Research Council of the Philippines.
In 2020, E. Mission has been awarded a two-year Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellowship at the Instituto Bioeconomia de la Universidad de Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain. She is working under the supervision of Prof. Maria Jose Cocero.
Finally, she is a wife and proud mother of 2 young girls.
