Bio
Since I joined LORTEK in 2005, I have been involved in the research and development of Friction Stir Welding technologies. Thanks to a Iñaki Goenaga Grant for training of young researchers I worked in the FSW process optimization for the AA6082-T6 aluminium alloy during 2005-2006. After one year at the University of Sheffield already as contracted member at LORTEK, I came back to LORTEK to continue my research and development activity on FSW technology, which is still ongoing nowadays.
My research work, among others, included the following research activities: Plasticised material flow analysis during FSW and Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) processes for several aluminium alloy combinations (2XXX, 7XXX, 5XXX, 6XXX) during 2008-2012; FSW and Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) process development of 5XXX and 6XXX aluminium alloys for reinforced panel manufacturing during 2009-2013; FSW process development and industrial implementation of dissimilar 1XXX and 6XXX butt joints during 2011-2012; FSW and FSSW technology development for high melting point alloys (steel and Ti-6Al-4V) during 2013-2016); Dissimilar aluminium-steel joints by FSW and FSSW in several projects and industrial contracts during 2011-2017; FSW process development for lap joints and T-joints during 2013-2018. These research activity has been the main focus of my research in the last few years, especially focused in FSW process development for lap joints using high strength aluminium alloys used in the aeronautic industry (2XXX and 7XXX alloys).
All the mentioned research activity included FSW tool development for different alloys and joint configurations, the analysis FSW joint formation mechanisms, extensive comprehension and appropriate process parameter selection methodologies, characterization of mechanical properties of FSW and FSSW joints, understanding of microstructural properties of FSW joints made with different alloys, etc. This includes complex metallurgical phenomena such as intermetallic compound formation in dissimilar joining, Abnormal Grain Growth (AGG) during post-weld heat treatments, incipient melting phenomena at grain boundaries, recrystallization and grain refinement, etc.
During the approximately 15 years of experience in FSW technology development, I have authored many scientific publications as well as international conference participations, having attended regularly to the most important events on FSW technology worldwide. All this activity has allowed me to be recognized as an expert into the international FSW scientific community. In 2011 I joined the international expert group WG-B4 for the development of an ISO standard for FSSW of aluminium alloys. I also have been member of the international expert group WG-B1 for the revision of the ISO standard for FSW of aluminium alloys.
In 2015 I started a part time PhD degree in Mechanical Performance of Materials at LORTEK and Mondragon Unibertsitatea, which is titled “Friction Stir Welding Technology for Advanced Manufacturing of Aircraft Structures”.
