Career Trajectory
Bio
Edward W. Keefer received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Laboratory of Guenter Gross, University of North Texas, Denton, TX, USA, a pioneer of in vitro multielectrode recording, in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
He was with Nobel Laureate Gerald Edelman, Neurosciences Institute, San Diego, CA, USA, where he acquired expertise in molecular biology, neuronal cell biology, and behavioral electrophysiology and was the first to show that stem cell-derived neural networks can elicit spontaneous activity. He has been focusing on peripheral nerve electrode interfaces for the control of prosthetic devices since 2006 and is a pioneer in using carbon nanotubes to improve neural electrodes. He is currently a Chief Executive Officer of Nerves Inc., Dallas, TX, USA. He has authored extensively on the use of neuronal networks for pharmacology and toxicology assays. His research interests include the development of nanotechnology, advanced materials, and novel recording techniques for brain/machine interfaces, advancing nerve regeneration through the understanding of molecular and cell biology.
