Career Trajectory
Bio
Berend (Berry) T. Jonker received the Ph.D. degree in solid-state physics/surface science from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1983, in the area of thin-film quantum-size effects.
He became a Staff Member with Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, in 1986, where he began work on low-dimensional magnetism in epitaxial magnetic metal films and superlattices and on spin-dependent carrier localization in semiconductor heterostructures. He is a Senior Scientist and the Head of the Magnetoelectronic Materials and Devices Section, Materials Science and Technology Division. His current research focuses on semiconductor spintronics, including electrical spin injection and transport in semiconductors and the fabrication and development of prototype spintronic devices. His work also addresses the epitaxial growth and development of ferromagnetic semiconductors, a class of materials which combine both ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties with the potential for new device functionality. He has coauthored 185 scientific publications and has presented over 95 invited talks. He is the holder of five U.S. patents.
Dr. Jonker is a Fellow of the AVS Science and Technology Society and the American Physical Society.
