Bio
My major interests are in neurobiology, specifically mechanisms of synaptic plasticity and their relationship to learning and memory and neurodegenerative disease. My early studies were of tRNA structure in Princeton for my PhD. After, at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, I helped to develop early DNA sequencing methods with Dr. Fred Sanger. Following that, at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories in London, I began studies of DNA tumor viruses, which I continued at Rockefeller University as a faculty member working on transcriptional expression by Adenovirus-2. I moved to NYU School of Medicine, where I studied immediate early gene regulation by growth factors and oncogene function. I was an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for 13 years, and during this period began neurobiological studies of synaptic plasticity. This work has linked mechanisms of AMPA receptor trafficking to homeostatic plasticity, synapse control by phosphorylation, molecular regulation of behavior, Alzheimer's disease, ALS and the effects of HIV infection on the brain. Recently, I have collaborated with researchers at the Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD) in Brazil as a Special Visiting Researcher supported by the Science Without Borders program of the Brazilian government. I have trained over 100 graduate students and post docs and have written extensively for the lay public about gene expression, memory formation, evolution and autism.
