By applying its advanced high-throughput R&D technology Avantium develops a next generation biofuels and biopolymers, based on furan derivatives, which can be derived from sugars and other carbohydrates using homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. In collaboration with NatureWorks the company is developping furan-based polyesters with characteristics comparable or better than PET.
The furan molecules have also advantageous qualities over current biofuels, such as bioethanol and biodiesel. The company successfully completed diesel engine tests together with DAF Trucks to demonstrate the potential of its novel biofuel.
