Eberhart Zrenner, Dr. med. Dr. h.c. mult., Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tübingen, Founding Director of the Research Institute of Ophthalmology of the University of Tübingen and Senior Professor at the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN). He had studied electronic engineering as well as medicine at the Technical University of Munich. Subsequently he worked within the Max-Planck-Society and with a Fogarty fellowship at the National Eye Institute, NIH, Bethesda, MD. His research interests include: retinal physiology and pathophysiology, hereditary retinal dystrophies, electrophysiology and neurodegeneration, ophthalmogenetics and gene therapy and in particular electronic retinal implants. Zrenner heads an interdisciplinary research group that has been developing an electronic retinal implant (photosensitive neuroprosthesis) since the mid-1990s. He is cofounder of Retina Implant AG. Additionally he is deeply involved in gene replacement therapy trials for hereditary retinal eye diseases and was instrumental to set up the first such trial in man with AAV8 vectors which was the first in Germany. He has published approximately 530 peer reviewed papers (see home page: http://www.eye-tuebingen.de/zrenner ), cited 25.800 times, with h-Index of 72 (42 since 2012), including Nature, Science, Science TM, Nature Photonics, Nature Genetics, He is co-inventor in 9 patent families.
