Bio
Elaine Stratford is Professor of Geography in the School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences in the College of Sciences and Engineering at the University of Tasmania.
Elaine's current passion project is funded by the Australian Research Council's Discovery Grant program, and is an elemental geography of drowning and the drowned. See her Twitter feed @ElaineS_Hobart for regular postings.
Elaine is internationally recognised and valued for research in human geography, and works to understand how people flourish in place, in their movements, in daily life, and over their lives. Studies with children and young people in island places have been a feature of Elaine's work, and she is adept at working with those from other disciplines, including - but not limited to - sociology, health science, anthropology, visual arts, politics, ecology, and education.
In July 2021, in recognition of her distinguished service to the discipline of Geography in Australia, Elaine was awarded the Griffith Taylor Medal by the Institute of Australian Geographers Incorporated. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Institute's Q1 international journal, Geographical Research.
Between July 2015 and April 2017, Elaine was foundation Director of the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment at the University of Tasmania, where she remains an adjunct professorial fellow. The Centre is part of the formal ten-year partnership agreement between the University and Tasmanian Government in association with the Office of the Governor of Tasmania. Prior to that time, she was a member of the School of Geography and Environmental Studies, and its head from 2005 to 2013. And after April 2017, Elaine was a research professor in the Institute for the Study of Social Change before being asked to lead, first, the outgoing School of Technology, Environments and Design (2020) and, second, to guide three new Schools emerging from that entity (2021).
Deeply committed to service, Elaine has extensive experience on University, local, Tasmanian, and federal government committees, school boards, and international professional organisations.
Elaine is or has been:
