Career Trajectory
Bio
I obtained my PhD from the University of the Basque Country (N. Spain) in 2003. My supervisor was Dr Alejandro Cearreta and the thesis entitled: Holocene environmental transformation of the Bilbao estuary: micropaleontological record of natural and anthropogenic process.
The PhD focused on 1) palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the Holocene sedimentary successions (8500 cal yrs BP-19th century) in the Bilbao estuary (N. Spain) and 2) an integrated chemical-faunal approach for the last 150 years of intense human transformation. The first element provided the evolution of different environments in the area under natural conditions while the second focused on the anthropogenic impact in coastal areas.
After my PhD, I developed two postdoctoral projects. During the years 2004 and 2005 I worked at the Department of Geology (University of Delaware, USA) with Prof. Ronald E. Martin and Dr Peter P. McLaughlin (Delaware Geological Survey, USA). Here, I studied the benthic foraminiferal and pollen record of marshes located along western Delaware Bay (St. Jones Estuary, USA).
The next year (2006) I started a collaborative project at the Department of Geology (University of Angers, France) with Prof. Frans Jorissen. This research project was part of the European research project 'Paleosalt' EUROCORES and involved the study of seasonal microfaunal assemblages (foraminifera) and the variation of the chemical composition (stable isotopes, Mg/Ca, elemental ratios) of calcareous foraminiferal tests in response to changes in local salinity and temperature values.
In 2007, I studied at the University of Cantabria the vertical distribution of Cs-137 and Pb-210 in core sediments from the southern Bay of Biscay with the aim of obtaining accurate chronologies of the last 100 years.
Since 2008, I am involved with the Department of Stratigraphy and Palaeontology (University of the Basque Country, Spain) Society of Science Aranzadi (Spain) and the Faculdade de Geologia of the Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal) in different projects, including environmental monitoring of heavily impacted estuaries, sea-level studies in Basque and North American marshes, micropalaeontological distribution and bioturbation.
During 2008 and 2009 I worked at the Centro de Geologia (University of Lisbon, Portugal) with Dr Francisco Fatela until I came to ECU in 2009.
