Bio
As a Thoracic Surgeon, I evaluate and treat patients with known or suspected lung cancer and clinical and pathologic staging are part of my daily clinical responsibilities. Our research efforts have allowed us to identify populations of patients who are at higher risk for benign disease and we have begun to develop models to predict benign and malignant disease in surgical populations. In an attempt to improve our diagnostic capabilities, we are evaluating the predictive capabilities of serum biomarkers in and radiographic imaging in patients with suspected lung cancer. Funding also allowed us to develop techniques that will allow surgeons to image, localize, and excise small suspicious nodules. So in order to improve our preoperative diagnostic accuracy and reduce non-therapeutic operations for benign disease, we are attempting to improve the predictive models, introduce molecular diagnostics, and improve imaging and localization technology. These models and new technologies will allow us to use genomics, proteomics, sophisticated modeling and diagnostic tools to personalize the diagnosis and treatment of early stage lung cancer. As we improve our understanding of the diagnosis of lung cancer, it will be critically important to develop new tools to improve the diagnosis of lung cancer in high risk populations such as those with COPD.
My past research interests focused on health services research in surgical patients: developing and implementing new monitoring strategies for critically ill patients, performing comparative effectiveness studies for new surgical technologies and designing tools to improve observed to expected mortality ratios in surgical patients. In 2006 I began a cardiothoracic residency and sought to focus my clinical and research efforts on improving the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. After starting on faculty in 2008, I began using the research training in public health, statistics and epidemiology to start the TREAT (Thoracic surgery, Research, Epidemiology, Diagnosis And Treatment) Lung Cancer team which is an experienced multidisciplinary research team with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, lung cancer early detection, and clinical trials. The members if this team meet weekly and include Melinda Aldrich, PhD, epidemiology, Jeffrey Blume, PhD, a senior biostatistician, Stephen Deppen, PhD, Heidi Chen, PhD, biostatistician with expertise in regression analysis in cancer studies and Pierre Massion, MD, a well-funded lung cancer pulmonologist and the Director of the Vanderbilt Thoracic Oncology program. Carissa Iverson and Sarah Fletcher are graduate students in genetics and biostatistics who work with the team. Using the existing infrastructure and established collaborations, the TREAT lung cancer team is uniquely positioned to refine, test and implement a predictive model that reduces unnecessary surgical biopsies in patients with suspicious lung lesions in a realistic clinical setting. We also have built close collaborations with other surgical groups throughout the country who will assist with taking this work to a national level.
