Bio
As a Senior Archaeologist for the State of California, my work took me to all corners of the state and allowed me experiences that most people cannot imagine. My fieldwork took me elsewhere in the world as well, to places like the Canadian Plains, the South Coast of Peru, the Australian Outback, and Siberia. I was the founding Director of the UNESCO-sponsored Fort Ross ~ Global Village Project (1996-2000), which brought Russian and American students together in a virtual classroom via the Internet. I am an Archaeological Research Facility Partner at the University of California at Berkeley, a Past President of the Society for California Archaeology, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Sonoma Ecology Center. My research interests and publications range from the megafauna of the last Ice Age to the archaeology of hippie communes and the Grateful Dead. I have given hundreds of interviews about my work and participated in films and documentaries on a wide range of topics. I enjoy telling stories about the past, whether it be on screen or while sitting around a campfire. I live in the greater San Francisco Bay area and spend much of my time writing, exploring, and raising a teenage son.
