Bio
His research seeks to gain a deeper mechanistic understanding of the cellular and molecular pathways by which plants grow and develop. To achieve this goal, researchers in his lab use conventional and advanced microscopy techniques to visualize the intricate structure and dynamics of plant cells, and ask how information processed at the cellular level is translated into specific growth responses at the organ and whole plant level. Microscopy is combined with genetic, genomic and biochemical approaches to uncover the interplay between the cytoskeleton, a network of dynamic filamentous proteins that drive the movement of organelles within the cell, and the endomembrane system, the molecular machinery that synthesizes, sorts and traffics cargo to their correct destination within and outside the cell. A major research focus has been on how the interaction between the cytoskeleton and endomembranes define root system architecture in model and crop plants, including uncovering mechanisms that regulate tip growth in root hairs, and the response of roots to gravity and other environmental factors such as water and nutrient deficits. His research has been funded by federal and state agencies including NASA, NSF, DOE and the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST).
