Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Dylan J. Edwards leads the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) in Philadelphia, PA, US. MRRI consists of 10 laboratories and is part of a US top 10 rehabilitation hospital, MossRehab. At MRRI, Edwards is also Director of the Human Motor Recovery Laboratory, which focuses on understanding and improving motor recovery after stroke and spinal cord injury. This work spans the translational continuum from basic science through to clinical trials. Dr. Edwards and his team conduct basic research to better understand the basis of motor symptoms, and these findings inform the development of novel rehabilitation treatment strategies. The lab uses contemporary techniques of non-invasive brain stimulation (such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation), neuroimaging, robotics and kinematics, and virtual reality, along with conventional rehabilitation therapies, to study and promote the motor recovery process.
Professor Edwards is recognized as leader in the field of Neurorehabilitation, having served two terms (6 years) on the board of directors, and recently the strategic planning committee, for the American Society for Neurorehabilitation. He has educational leadership and administration experience. He initiated and chaired an international meeting on the State of the Science in Post-Stroke Motor Recovery at ECU in 2018, with leaders in the field; co-chaired a successful Continuing Medical Education course at Harvard Medical School for a decade (2008-2018); co-founded the annual NYC Neuromodulation Symposium; and co-founded and co-directed the New York Rehabilitation Robotics Symposium. Edwards has over a decade of experience in academia, including teaching, administration, mentoring, curriculum development and the historical transition to electronic teaching platforms. He has given invited lectures at the US Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Sciences, Washington DC); and been invited as a speaker on scientific rigor of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) at the US National Institute of Health (NIH). He has been an invited expert on the international technical training standards committee for NIBS (International Federation for Clinical Neurophysiology); and on rehabilitation robotics for the US Food and Drug Administration. He has further served on Data Safety Monitoring Boards of NIH funded studies; as well as served as an invited reviewer for federal competitive grants in the US, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
