个人简介
Dunstan J. Matungwa is a Research Officer at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania, where he previously worked as a Qualitative Research Coordinator. Prior to coming to NIMR, he was a member of the sociology and anthropology faculty at the University of Dar es Salaam. As a cultural (or social) anthropologist, he uses qualitative and participatory research approaches to examine the socio-cultural, economic, political, and historical forces and processes through which precarity, social inequality, violence, injury, pain, suffering, health, and illness are produced, experienced, understood, and navigated.
His areas of research interest include precarity, social inequality, violence, injury, suffering, pain, social determinants of health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, death and dying, necropolitics, and research ethics. As a researcher, he is passionate about working with and mentoring students in the institutions of higher learning who have related research interests. In addition to research, he is interested in teaching the history of anthropological theory, sociological theory, anthropology (or sociology) of health and illness, social epidemiology, anthropology of gender, development studies, anthropology (or sociology) of development, anthropology of death and dying, qualitative research, and research ethics.
His research has been supported by awards from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the U.K. Aid from the U.K. government – through the Coalition for Operational Research on Neglected Tropical Diseases (COR-NTD), Rutgers University, Bigel Endowment Fund, the Global Fund, the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), Sida/SAREC, the University of Dar es Salaam, among other sources.
Matungwa earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology at the University of Dar es Salaam, and his master’s degree in anthropology at Rutgers University, where he is also a doctoral candidate in anthropology.
