My research interests include using laser spectroscopy and nonlinear optics to study photophysical and photochemical processes in organic and biological molecules, molecular aggregates, dendrimers, polymers, and proteins. Over the last decade, I have focused on the multiphoton absorption of organic systems and its applications to high-capacity 3D memory, two-photon microscopy, photodynamic therapy of cancer, and two-photon hyperspectral sensitive detection of cancer cells. We have characterized the spectra of two-photon absorption standard dyes, which are now widely used around the world, and used the quantitative analysis of two-photon absorption spectra to learn about molecular properties that are inaccessible in linear spectroscopy. In 2006 we started a collaboration with Prof. Thomas Hughes in the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience (MSU) which resulted in a series of publications on multiphoton absorption properties of a wide variety of fluorescent proteins.
