Bio
Don is emeritus professor of Communication Studies, of Language & Literacy Education, and of Linguistics at the University of Georgia, where he directed the basic course in public speaking and taught English for Scientific Communication. With the assistance of a CDC grant, he co-founded Georgia’s Center for Health and Risk Communication. Don was founding Chair of the Georgia Alliance for Health Literacy and co-convenor of Health Literacy Northwest. He developed the concepts of “listenability” and “listenable speaking” within the field of health literacy. He has taught classes at CDCU and for other CDC units for more than 10 years.. Outside of CDC, Don has provided training to telehealth nurses, health insurance navigators, and primary care providers, among others. Participants have welcomed the highly interactive, hands-on, and practical style of instruction that characterizes his teaching.
Don teaches intercultural communication, especially in health contexts. Under the rubric "Reverse Linguistic Stereotyping," much of his published research examines how listeners' perceptions and even comprehension of non-native speech is affected by those listeners' stereotyped expectations. Rubin has led education abroad classes to Australia’s Northern Territory and to Israel to study communication, culture, and health. He has been a Fulbright scholar in Vietnam and in Israel. Rubin is currently Co-PI of the Consortium for Analysis of Student Success Through International Education (CASSIE). Previously he was research director for the Georgia Learning of Students Studying Abroad Initiative (GLOSSARI; Richard Sutton, PI). He conducts research with a variety of collaborators on international learning outcomes assessment, especially with respect to sustainability education and global citizenship.
