Bio
Dominic started his chemistry degree in 2013 at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland and graduated in Summer 2018 with a first-class MChem in Chemistry with Materials Chemistry. For his final year project, he research "Conjugated Porous Polymers for Heterogeneous Photocatalysis" under the supervision of Dr. Filipe Vilela, and was awarded the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) prize for research in materials chemistry.
In Autumn of 2018, Dominic joined the Critical Resource Catalysis (CRITICAT) CDT and began his PhD. researching at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland), under the joint supervision of Dr. Filipe Vilela and Dr. Scott Dalgarno. This involved an initial 6 month secondment to the University of St. Andrews (St. Andrews, Scotland) to undertake training into various aspects of catalysis. After this 6 months, he returned to Heriot-Watt University to begin research into the design, synthesis and application of novel organophotocatalysts based on the benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole group. This included preparing molecular photocatalysts that could be further incorporated into supramolecular host-guest systems or integrated into heterogeneous polymers such as conjugated porous polymers and polymers of intrinsic microporosity. He is currently in his final year and is expected to finish early September 2022.
In addition to chemistry research, Dominic also has an interest in chemistry teaching and has helped developed a number of teaching materials that are currently being used at Heriot-Watt University. This includes developing an 8 week project for final year BSc students and web-based Android apps for teaching polymer chemistry.
