个人简介
Dr. Kim was trained in biology for undergraduate at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. After obtaining his master’s degree at the same institution, he started working at Daewoo Co., Korea. Mechanical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY, USA marked his next stop in his professional development in the interdisciplinary field of basic science and applied engineering. His Ph.D dissertation focused intensively in biomechanics of the bone-implant interface from the microscopic point-of-view.
During postdoctoral fellowship at IHP, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY, he performed fatigue tests for cement-bone interfaces using a material test system (MTS). Based on the fatigue testing, he developed the first model of cement-bone creep failure using human bones. Continuing his research at Bone and Joint Center, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, the main focus was to assess tissue stress variability and strength in vertebral bone. The published works demonstrate his expertise in research of the advancement of imaging and computational techniques, such as large scale finite element modeling and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).
He is a full professor with tenure at the division of Orthodontics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. His current research topics include multiscale (10-2 to 10-7 m) characterization for elastic, viscoelastic, and fracture behavior of bone and cartilage, and dental implant system using nanoindentation at the tissue-level and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) at the organ-level, bone mineralization analysis using micro-CT and clinical cone beam CT (CBCT). As the PI, he has managed several grants including AAOF biomedical research grant, OSU seed grant, corporate grants, and NIH grant. His research background is extending in the elastic, viscoelastic, and fracture characterization of materials. Dr. Kim has published more than 100 peer reviewed full papers. His interdisciplinary training of biology and mechanical engineering, and the analytical techniques developed through the previous studies are currently used for many research projects.
