Career Trajectory
Bio
Dirk I. L. de Villiers (Senior Member, IEEE) was born in Langebaan, South Africa. He received the B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 2004 and 2007, respectively.
From 2008 to 2009, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the University of Stellenbosch, working on antenna feeds for the South African Square Kilometre Array (SKA) program. He is currently a Professor with the University of Stellenbosch, where he holds the SARChI Research Chair in antenna systems for SKA. He has been a Visiting Researcher with the University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium, and the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. Since 2010, he has been regularly working on contract for EMSS Antennas (Pty), Ltd., Stellenbosch, on the design of the reflector antenna systems for the MeerKAT, SKA, and next-generation very large array radio telescopes. His current research interests include reflector antennas for radio astronomy and surrogate-based optimization of microwave components.
Dr. de Villiers is a Senior Member of URSI. He served as the Chair for the South African IEEE joint AP/MTT/EMC chapter from 2017 to 2018.
