My domain of specialization in Structural Biology is the study of membrane proteins. These proteins comprise up to 30% of genes in an organism but, due to their difficulty to obtain stable pure protein, they are vastly understudied. These proteins are responsible for essential roles in cells and thus are prime targets for drug discovery.
My work as been focused in the study of E.coli membrane proteins. However, my most prolific work has been the study of a Type-II NADH Dehydrogenase, work represented by the 2 articles where I have co-authorship (Rosario et.al. 2015; Sousa et.al. 2017). I have also worked in soluble protein crystallization of several organisms (Campylobacter jejuni, Bilophila wadsworthia, Homo Sapiens).
I was awarded in 2019 with a PhD Fellowship under the PhD Program Molecular Biosciences - Biology at the Host Microbe Interface. In this PhD, I will aim towards unravelling the molecular and structural basis of Zika virus antibody neutralization in collaboration with Fiocruz and IGC Institutes. This is a multidisciplinary project ranging from biophysical characterization and structural biology to the development of a cheap and reliable diagnostics test to detected the Zika virus. Within this project, we have already published a paper showing the potential of a small protein in neutralizing the Zika Virus (Viana et al. 2023).
Besides my main project, I have also contributed to side projects ranging from characterizing a Arabinofuranosyltransferase from mycobacterium tuberculosis (Tan et al. 2020) to profiling the antibody composition in breast milk of naive and vaccinated women against SARS-COV19 (Gonçalves et al. 2021).
