个人简介
Dr. Dhriti Banerjee joined as the Director, Zoological Survey of India, on the 6th of August ,2021. She was the first woman to grace the chair in the 105-year history of the Zoological Survey of India, a premiere research institution on Faunal Biodiversity and Conservation under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change.
A Presidency College graduate, she began her research career on the physiological effects of sustained use of abusive drugs in human and animals and was awarded several fellowships and grants for her research projects. On completion of her Ph.D., she joined Zoological Survey of India in 1998 as a junior research scientist. Biodiversity, faunal documentation, molecular species characterisation and geospatial modelling and monitoring of species is her forte. Her studies are focussed on Taxonomy, Conservation, Molecular Systematics, species distribution and Biodiversity of Diptera. She had initiated Molecular research in ZSI way back in 2011. Known as the Lady of the Flies she is also into the science of Criminal Forensics and is trying to find suitable models of fly species which can be used for crime detection in Indian environmental conditions to aid law enforcing agencies.
Dr Dhriti Banerjee is also the lady behind the Digital ZSI, an extremely ambitious program with futuristic goals of infusing Artificial Intelligence into classical biodiversity research. It also would mean a complete web-based information of the Indian Fauna its morpho-taxonomic, genetic as well as its distribution over time and space. This web-based information would enable all researchers, wildlife enthusiasts, students, policy managers, conservationists and anyone interested in biodiversity to access the specimens as well as available information of the National Zoological Collection and the Fauna of India by the click of a mouse.
Dr. Dhriti Banerjee handles projects funded by international agencies like the World Bank, GIZ and the CBD other than projects funded by the National Agencies and her own Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. She has 21 books, 41 book chapters and 209 research articles in peer reviewed national and international journals and quite a few popular articles in vernaculars. Dr. Banerjee has conducted several awareness programs and outreach activities for students of biodiversity studies. She has delivered several talks on popular scientific topics aired by the Akashvaani and the Doordarshan. She has been widely covered nationally and internationally by the print, television and digital media. She is a member of more than 15 Learned Societies (both International and National) and has worked closely with the Ramakrishna Mission and the Rotary Foundation. Dr. Banerjee was conferred with the award of the “Exceptional Woman of Excellence”, by the Women’s Economic Forum, at The Hague, Netherlands on the International Women’s Day, 2018. Very recently she has been awarded the “Amazing Godavari Memorial Award for Excellence in the field of Education and Science” on the 30th of January 2022. Her vision is to enable ZSI to scale new heights through unbiased empowerment of its scientific fraternity for a sustainable tomorrow
