DEVRA I. JARVIS is the Coordinator of the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research and the President and Foundation Director of The Raffaella Foundation, a foundation that supports actions that embrace diversity to promote equity, solidarity and well-being in urban societies and agricultural ecosystems. She is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, an Adjunct Faculty at Washington State University and an Adjunct Professor at the Institut Agronomique et Veterinaire Hassan II, Morocco. She earned a BA with Honors in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley (1981) completing a project with the Forest Service on the Miwok Indians use of natural resources for traditional ceremonies. After teaching two years of English in China (1982-1984) she completed a MSc is in Forest Resources Management at the University of Washington (1985), and a PhD in Botany (Palynology) in 1993, from the University of Washington, her research included coring 13 lakes for fossil and modern pollen in SW China to study the last 10,000 years of vegetation and climate change. From 1991-1995 she worked for the UN World Food Program (WFP), first in China monitoring development projects, and then in Uganda as Head of the Relief and Emergency Department for food aid for South Sudan and Rwanda Refugees. For the last 30 yeas she has worked with national partners in Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia Morocco, Vietnam, China, Nepal, Hungary, Syria, Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Ethiopia, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the U.S. and the European Union to develop scientific evidence to support the use of local crop genetic diversity to improve the production and resilience of small–holder farmers, including the development of the Diversity Assessment Tool for Agrobiodiversity and Resilience (DATAR). The impact of her projects ranges from reduce damage from pests and disease without pesticides for common bean and banana in Uganda and Ecuador, fruit tree nurseries in Central Asia providing over 1.5 million traditional varieties annually to farmers, and participatory bred varieties of rice, sorghum and millet being released through national systems in Nepal and Mali. Jarvis is the co-author of over 80 research articles, book chapters and proceedings, including lead author of Managing Biodiversity in Agricultural Ecosystems, and lead author of the University text book Crop Genetic Diversity in the Field and on the Farm, Principals and Applications in Research Practices translated into in French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
