MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS
1. Characterisation of gas electrodes in alkali nitrate melts: solubility of gases; potentiometric behaviour of oxygen and hydrogen electrodes; voltammetric behaviour of oxygen, hydrogen and ammonia electrodes (until 1986);
2. Development of in-situ accumulation techniques for EAAS determination of trace metal in liquid and gaseous matrices (until 1982);
3. Applications of surface analysis: XPS/XAES data acquisition and analysis; XPS characterisation of vapour phase corrosion of stainless steels; XPS/XAES/SEM/SIMS characterisation of materials of technological interest (polymers, electrodes, carbon fibres, superconductors etc.); applications of XPS in environmental researches (until 1995);
4. Development of chemically modified electrodes as detectors for quantifying analytes of alimentary and biological concern by FIA and HPLC (until 2002);
5. Development of data analysis techniques in analytical quality assurance;
6. Validation of analytical methods for determining analytes of environmental and alimentary concern in real matrices;
7. Development of chemically modified electrochemical sensors for quantifying analytes of environmental and alimentary concern.
The research project Surface activation and XPS/FTIRM/SEM characterisation of carbon fibers for advanced composite materials (1989–1992). Prof. E. Desimoni, the scientific and administrative responsibe, was granted with 281.000 ECU by European Institute of Technology (EIT: an industrial consortium founded in February 1988 by five large European Companies with major research and development programmes: AT&T, ENICHEM, IBM Europe, Montedison e Philips).
