Bio
Dr Deborah Vickers is a Speech and Hearing Scientist and the Principal Investigator leading the SOUND Lab at the University of Cambridge. Deborah's lab group is funded by an MRC Senior Fellowship in Hearing Research and an NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research. Deborah's research is translational in nature and works closely with clinicians and industry to realise the potential of novel interventions. This pathway is readily realised because of her background in both academia and the medical device industry.
Her research team uses electrophysiological measures to understand brain changes in cochlear implant users and guide clinical interventions that can improve outcomes for both paediatric and adult cochlear implant recipients. In addition, her team explore other approaches for maximizing outcomes such as virtual reality training Apps for improving the use of bilateral cochlear implants in older children and teenagers.
Deborah has been instrumental in updating the NICE guidelines on cochlear implant candidacy in the UK and hosts the Translational Auditory Research Group (TARG) bringing together clinicians and researchers in hearing to maximise the impact of the SOUND Lab research programme.
