Bio
Dr. Heimburger is Professor of Medicine in the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) and the Division of Epidemiology. As VIGH’s Associate Director for Education and Training from 2009 to 2019, he directed VIGH’s education and training programs for Vanderbilt students and trainees as well as research training opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral trainees from low- and middle-income countries. These included co-creation and co-direction of the Global Health Track in Vanderbilt’s Master of Public Health Program and the Vanderbilt Training Program in Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer (MAGEC). He still co-directs the UNZA-Vanderbilt Partnership for HIV-NCD Research (UVP, https://www.vumc.org/global-health/current-research-and-training-programs/unza-vanderbilt-partnership-hiv-ncd-research-uvp-2), the Vanderbilt-Zambia Cancer Research Training Program (VZCARE, https://www.vumc.org/global-health/latest-news-vigh/vanderbilt-and-zambian-colleagues-establish-cancer-research-and-training-program), and the Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke Consortium for Global Health Fellows (https://www.vumc.org/vecd/). His principal research interests are nutritional influences on HIV treatment outcomes, including non-communicable conditions, in African adults, and global health education and training.
Dr. Heimburger received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1978, internal medicine residency at St. Louis University, and clinical nutrition fellowship and M.S. in nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). From 1981 to 2009, he served on the faculty of the Departments of Nutrition Sciences and Medicine at UAB, where his titles included Senior Scientist in the UAB Clinical Nutrition Research Center, Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Center for AIDS Research; Associate Director of the Sparkman Center for Global Health; and Director of the NIH-funded Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program (CPCTP) and the Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program. Under his leadership the CPCTP facilitated the training of approximately 140 pre- and post-doctoral students and fellows, to increase the pool of chronic disease specialists committed to cancer prevention and control.
Dr. Heimburger was very active in teaching nutrition at UAB and advocating for medical nutrition education around the country. For 20 years he directed a required first-year UAB medical school course in Nutrition. He was the principal editor of three editions of the Handbook of Clinical Nutrition, and has contributed chapters on clinical nutrition to six editions of the Cecil Textbook of Medicine, three editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, two editions of Medicine for the Practicing Physician, and two editions of Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease. He received the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition’s Dannon Institute Award for Excellence in Medical/Dental Nutrition Education, and UAB School of Medicine’s Argus Award for Best Course Director and/or Best Course. He founded and directed the Intersociety Professional Nutrition Education Consortium and the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists.
For 18 years Dr. Heimburger served as Director of UAB’s Medical Nutrition Services, and for 10 years as Medical Director of UAB’s EatRight Weight Management Program. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Zambia in 2006 and he has served on the Advisory Board of the Fogarty International Center (NIH), the governing Council of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, Initial Review Group Subcommittee G for the National Cancer Institute, the U.S. FDA’s Food Advisory Committee, and a Test Materials Development Committee for the United States Medical Licensing Examination.
