Bio
David Simpson has worked with air pollution modelling since 1982. His main
work has focused on developing EMEP’s 3D Eulerian model systems. Special
interests include biosphere-atmosphere exchange (BVOC emissions, ozone deposition and N-exchange), ozone chemistry, and both primary and secondary organic
aerosol, always with a strong focus on model evaluation. He has worked within
the EU projects MERLIN, NOFRETETE, CARBOSOL, EUCAARI, NitroEurope,
PEGASOS and ECLAIRE projects, and is currently working within the Copernicus
CAMS81 emissions project.
He is currently PI, and member of both the Steering Committee and board of
the Swedish strategic research initiative on Modelling the Regional and Global
Earth System (MERGE). He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the
1Swedish-Chinese ’PhotoSmog’ project (photosmog.gu.se).
David Simpson currently supervises two Post-Docs at Chalmers. He was also
main supervisor for Robert Bergstrom (GU) who achieved his PhD in 2015 on the ¨
subject of organic aerosol modelling for EMEP.
DS has extensive cooperation with several groups active in the field of organic
aerosols, notably with the Dept. Chemistry, Gothenburg University, Sweden, Julich ¨
Research Centre, Germany, the University of Manchester, UK. He has explored
the issue of condensable organics in a series of studies in cooperation with TNO,
Netherlands, and organised a well-received NMR-funded workshop of emissions,
measurement, modelling and policy-oriented experts in March 2020.
DS has 112 peer-reviewed papers (see also https://publons.com/a/
2876522), H-index 49, with average citations per article 89, and has numerous
report and book contributions and Conference papers. He was one of the 5 coordinating authors of the review on the formation, properties and impact of secondary
organic aerosol: current and emerging issues, Hallquist et al. (Atmos. Chem.
Phys., 2009), which has now been cited more than 2100 times.
Membership in committees, etc.:
• 2017-now, Member Scientific Advisory group (SAG) on Reactive Gases,
Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme of the World Meteorological
Organisation (WMO).
• 2009-now, Board-member, MERGE strategic research initiative on Modelling the Regional and Global Earth System (http://www.cec.lu.se/research/merge)
• 2014-2020, Steering Committee, Swedish-Chinese Photosmog project
• 2012-2017, Associate editor, Journal of Geophysical Research
• 2011-2015, Executive Steering Group, EU ECLAIRE project
• 2008-2011 Steering Committee, Gothenburg Atmospheric Science Centre
• Initiator and editor of Atmos. Chem. Phys. special issue on EMEP (http:
//www.atmos-chem-phys.net/special_issue152.html)
• 2011-2013 Lead author, sub-chapter on ’Atmospheric chemistry’, BACC-II
(BALTEX Assessment of Climate Change for the Baltic Sea Basin) report
(published 2015).
