Bio
My research interests are focussed upon the physiology of the kidney in health and disease. In particular, I am interested in how nutrition may affect function of the kidney in the short or longer term. An acute loss of kidney function is called Acute Kidney Injury or AKI. My work investigates how we can prevent, ameliorate or benefit recovery from AKI. The research program involves clinical and experimental studies conducted at Nottingham whilst also benefiting from local and international collaborations. Poor kidney function over a longer period of time is called Chronic Kidney Disease or CKD. I have a long-standing, general interest in the relationship between good nutrition and longer-term kidney health. For example, maternal malnutrition may impact healthspan of the subsequent children, rendering them more prone to CKD or higher blood pressure. More recently, I have begun to investigate how dietary micronutrient imbalance may underpin CKD and other non-communicable diseases in domestic animal populations.
